Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice | Book Review 2017

"I see..." said the vampire thoughtfully, and slowly he walked across the room towards the window. For a long time he stood there against the dim light from Divisadero Street and the passing beams of traffic. The boy could see furnishings of the room more clearly now, the round oak table, the chairs. A wash basin hung on one wall with a mirror. He set his brief case on the table and waited."

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice // After finishing The Girls by Emma Cline {you can read my review here}, I really fancied a complete change in genre. This book has been in my house for years and was always ignored. Last week, I decided to sit down for five minutes and it caught my eye - I started reading and my inner emo was hooked. Interview with the Vampire is described as the 'second best vampire story of all time' {after Dracula, not Twilight... haha!} and it did not disappoint.

The story starts immediately. A vampire is sat at a table with a newspaper reporter, and he is about to give an exclusive insight into his life and what is means to be a vampire. We follow the life of Louis, our 200 year old vampire who originated from New Orleans. We discover he's been created by fellow vampire, Lestat, and for the first half of the book, we follow their adventure into the afterlife. We are quickly introduced to some fantastic characters such as Claudia, a five year old child vampire (super creepy if you ask me) and Armand, the leader of a group of vampires living in an old theatre in Paris {how amny times is it possible to use the word 'vampire' in a paragraph? Clearly A LOT.... haha, apologies!}.

Without giving too much away, I did get ever so slightlyyyyy bored with Claudia and Louis' journey around Europe, and their meeting with Armand left me a bit bored. BUT I suppose I should let you in on a little secret.... I had actually seen the movie first (yes, the one with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas and some really bad wigs...) before reading the book. And whilst I agree, the book is better, it perhaps killed the suspense a little for me... because I'd seen the movie, I knew how the book was going to end, so I didn't get the full effect from the book.

Although saying that, I still really enjoyed this book, and the inner part of me that loves all things dark and mysterious, was pleasantly surprised. I'd like to read more titles by Anne Rice... perhaps Queen of the Damned next? I think there is a movie of that one too, but I'll refrain from watching for now...

Have you read this book? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

More soon,

Helen
