This Unruly Mess I've Made // Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Concert 2016

In the past, I was never a huge fan of hip-hop and would only listen to it occasionally - I think it’s fair to say that it has never been my ‘go to’ genre. But life can work in some weird and wonderful ways – have you ever listened to an artist and fallen in love with all their songs? Because that happened to me with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. My boyfriend has been a huge fan from the beginning, owning the first album and I’d like to thank him for introducing me to such a fantastic artist. I remember the first time I listened to ‘The Heist’ and I was mesmerized by songs such as Ten Thousand Hours, Jimmy Iovine and Wings. I obviously loved the well-known tracks such as Thrift Shop, Can’t Hold Us and Same Love, but it was the less popular, less heard tracks like Starting Over and Victory Lap that I really grew to love.

As soon as I heard about ‘This Unruly Mess I’ve Made’ Tour, I knew we had to go. We arrived early and queued up to get the best view possible. We stood in the crowd for three and a half hours waiting for the band to take the stage, and well, it was definitely worth the wait. I didn’t think I could love Macklemore more than I already do, but after seeing him perform all his tracks live, with so much passion and enthusiasm, he’s become one of my favourite artists of all time.
What I loved about watching him and Ryan Lewis perform live, is that you can tell that they love what they do and everything is sincere. After a performance of the track Wings, Macklemore spoke about how he had written that song after completing rehab for alcohol abuse, and the sound of fans singing along to his lyrics would never get old to him. The band ended the concert with not one, not two, but three encores, showing just how dedicated they are to their fans. As confetti fell in the arena to the final song of Downtown, I just felt so lucky to have witnessed such a fantastic performance.

I think the reason why I love and admire Macklemore so much is because he has achieved everything by himself. As an artist, he refused to be bought and decided to self-produce, self-record and self-release all his own material, and in an industry so cut-throat like music, that is hella impressive.
Having you seen Macklemore perform live? Let me know what you think below!
More soon,

Helen

  7. I LOVE Macklemore. I was sooo gutted that he didn't perform anywhere near me. I was properly stalking his Snapchat while he was in the UK! I LOVE this album - Light Tunnels & Brad Pitt's Ugly Cousin are two of my faves.
